Change to student funding benefits Armed Forces Families

Change to student funding benefits Armed Forces families
The Army Families Federation (AFF) is delighted that, after much campaigning, Service families should now find it much easier to undertake distance learning while posted overseas.
Following an announcement by Universities Minister Jo Johnson, Forces families should no longer be excluded from accessing a student loan if they are not resident in the UK on the first day of their chosen course. The new rule will grant eligibility for student funding for a UK based distance learning course even if families are posted overseas while the course is still ongoing.
Championing spouse training
AFF has worked hard for some time, to improve the employment and training prospects of Army spouses. Given that spouses are unable to work in some overseas locations, they are pleased that improved training opportunities will now be available.
AFF Chief Executive Sara Baade said: “AFF is delighted with the Government’s decision to change student funding rules in order to provide Armed Forces families who are posted abroad with the same opportunities as those living in the UK, when accessing Student Finance England loans.
AFF is committed to ensuring our families are not disadvantaged due to the nature of their Service and this decision is an excellent conclusion to months of joint working with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). These changes open up a raft of opportunities for the families of serving personnel who previously might have had to forgo training whilst posted abroad; we look forward to seeing the benefits over the months and years to come.”

Voices of Veterans in Need report by SSAFA

For many people, a veteran is an old man with medals and a beret, marching on Remembrance Sunday. The truth can sometimes be very different. We are now seeing a generation of men and women leave the services at a young age.

Future Accommodation Model – Survey for Service Personnel and Spouses

The Ministry of Defence is thinking about how it provides Service Personnel with accommodation in the future. This follows the SDSR commitment to make a new accommodation offer to help more personnel live in private accommodation and meet their aspirations for home ownership. The proposals are still in development. Future Accommodation Model (FAM) is still at an early stage. No decisions have been finalised, and the details are likely to change.

It is important that Service families, wherever they are in the world, have a chance to feedback their views on how they would like accommodation to be provided. Families are requested to complete the AFF survey to provide their views and feedback and to help influence the decisions being made.

Service Families Federations are hosting the Big Survey 2016 – Future of Housing. AFF has three Fitbit Flex to giveaway for those taking the survey (those wanting to be entered for a chance to win one will need to include their details at the end of the survey).

For more information on the Future Accommodation Model, visit the AFF website -http://www.aff.org.uk/linkedfiles/aff/latest_news_information/20160623-futureaccommodationmodelbriefingforfamfeds.pdf

On-call Firefighters

Do you live or work within five minutes of a fire station? If so, then being a retained firefighter might be a possibility!

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service relies on retained (or on-call) firefighters to maintain its emergency response.

On-call firefighters make themselves available to respond to a pager when a 999 call is made, and cover is needed at all times. Contracted hours can vary, but personnel usually make themselves available for between 48 and 120 hours per week. Between them, each fire station team will provide cover for weekdays, evenings, nights and weekends.

On-call firefighters receive the same training and development as wholetime colleagues, and can be called to all manner of emergencies, including fires, road traffic collisions, animal rescues and flooding.

The pay does vary, depending on how much cover is given, but it is fantastically rewarding to be a part of your community and in a position to help people.

In order to be on-call, you need to be able to respond to the fire station in around five minutes once your pager goes off. This can be from home or work, and employers can benefit from a firefighter’s training – such as first aid, manual handling, a greater understanding of health & safety in the workplace, and enhanced team spirit.

Advice: Travelling With Children That Have A Different Surname

If you’re travelling this year with children that have a different surname to you, please take note.
It is becoming increasingly common for passport control staff in airports to demand proof that you are the legal guardian.
Clearly the sensible idea behind this increased security is to prevent children being abducted.

What should you do?

First, you should contact the airline you are flying with in advance and:
1) Ask them if they have a specific procedure;
2) Ask them to record details of your situation before you fly.
Second, you should take along to the airport any legal document that provides evidence of your relation to the child or guardianship. If you are taking a child away who is not your own, you should have a consent letter from the parent/s signed in advance.
If you are separated or divorced and don’t have permission from your ex-partner (and can’t get it) you may need to investigate permission from the courts. This only applies if the ex-partner still has shared parental responsibility.
